Jay's mom Allison returned to Anacortes for another great springtime visit. In spite of missing the tulips for the second time (last year she came too early, this year a tad too late), we think she managed to have a pretty good time...we certainly did!
All the pictures (mostly Allison's) can be seen here:

Highlights of her time here included lots of good food and wine, walks, movies, chess, playing with the kitties, and last but not least a great weekend trip by ferry to Victoria, BC, which included a visit to the famous Butchart Gardens and getting together with friends Andy and Jen whom we first met in Borneo but now live in Victoria. The Gardens were started about 100 years ago when Mr. and Mrs. Butchart turned their limestone quarry property into impressive gardens that eventually became a popular public attraction.

They were truly a sight to behold, with tulip season in full effect. Skagit Valley's tulips have a shorter season because they cut off the heads to preserve the bulbs, but at Butchart the tulips were the main attraction. This garden is open throughout the year, and we surmise that each season requires a massive effort to re-plant the gardens with blooming varieties.

We found this pair of snakes at the garden - what a treat!!

The BC Parliament building all lit-up in Victoria.

The wildflowers are blooming and we braved the rain in Washington Park to see them.
