This shot was taken from the street in front of our house.... not bad for a view eh?Last weekend we shunned the superbowl (we don't really care about football anyway) and hit the slopes. We predicted, correctly, that Mt. Baker would be completely empty and we were right! We felt like we had the mountain all to ourselves, although there were a few other smart folks like us out there. =) The other two times we skied here, we had to contend with fairly crowded slopes. But not last Sunday! The weather wasn't exactly perfect, which also may have accounted for the empty trails. The snow was wet and we were pretty drenched by the end of the day. We stopped at a great brewery on our drive back to Anacortes called the North Fork Brewery, Pizza Shrine, and Wedding Chapel. You know it must be cool with a name like that eh? They must have one of the best barleywines in the world - it is called the Hair of the Frog. Yummy.
This weekend we were quite lazy. We had friends over for dinner on Saturday so we spent the day in the kitchen prepping. We have a winter farm share here and thus, we have lots of winter veggies to deal with like sunchokes and potatoes and leeks. We also have tons of apples and pears! Washington is a great state to live in because you can eat fairly locally even in the winter. We are trying! But we need some more help in the sunchoke department.
We took a hike today in the forest lands of Anacortes. This hike was a 10 minute drive from our house. Anacortes is a gem to have all these trails in our backyard. The view below is of the Swinomish Reservation; I get to spend a lot of time on those beaches!
We had heard that there were some stands of old-growth forests in the area we were hiking in. We have spent many other days looking for big trees - and today we think we finally found the stand of biggies! Massive cedars were towering around us when we ended up on this trail by accident (we were "exploring"). It was lovely!
