Allison visits Anacortes....

Allison came to visit and spent a wonderful week with us in Washington. To make things even better we spent a lot of time with cousin/niece Sophia (who lives in Seattle). Sophia joined us on our weekend trip to Mt. Rainier National Park. Just look at that gorgeous family below...

We hiked up to Snow Lake, but the snow (literally) stopped us from getting to the lake. It didn't matter because the hike was loaded with wildflowers and wonderful views. We took our time and tried to identify numerous plants and trees. It is fun being a biologist with other liked-minded people.

Grove of the Patriarchs in Mt. Rainier NP. Here is the family with a huge red cedar.

Just last year Jay and I did a nice long hike in the same spot. This year there was so much snow you couldn't even see the trail!

We spent Sunday at the Anacortes Arts Festival. Here we were watching a giant roller thing create giant block prints. It was totally cool. Allison's photo below (she also took the roller shot) is of one of the many lovely booths in town. I loved this artist even though I couldn't totally afford those awesome vases.

We love taking people to Deception Pass State Park, so we stuck with that tradition during Allison's visit. Here we are soaking up the sun before firing up the grill for an evening BBQ.

The thimbleberries were ripe! We had to harvest everyone we saw. After a long foraging session we made a thimbleberry sauce and served it over vanilla ice cream. I was the happiest thing around.

Jay took a day off and headed to Orcas Island with kayaks and Allison. Here she is - her first time in a kayak! They paddled for a few lovely hours on Mountain Lake in Moran State Park.

Allison sadly left us for the east coast on Thursday night. Over the weekend we headed to the mountains for an overnight and a nice long day hike. We always feel less lonely in the mountains....

We found huckleberries! Ohhhh yum. Here is Jay foraging.

Beautiful North Cascades
