Hey there friends and family!
Jay and I are in the midst of researching what to do while we are in southern Africa. We have, basically, the entire month of October to explore the region (the last week of September will be with our friends Nickie and Carole in Cape Town). We have found some neat overland tour companies that can cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. And we know that a fair amount of you have been to Africa - or that you just might know more about it than us.... so give us your opinion on these trip ideas please!
Here's #1:
South Africa and Mozambique trip that includes the following stops: Johannesburg - Hlane Royal National Park - Praia do Tofo - Vilankulo - Bazaruto Archipelago - Inhambane - Maputo - Kruger National Park - Blyde River Canyon - God's Window - Bourke's Luck Potholes
This trip means lots of water time, whale sharks, dugongs, and wildlife at Kruger NP. And maybe an extra flight for us because I want to see Vic. Falls (Jay has already been there and done that).
Here's #2: Cape Town, Namibia, Botswana, Victoria Falls that includes the following stops: Cederberg - Orange/Gariep River - Fish River Canyon - Namib Naukluft NP - Sossusvlei - Swakopmund - Himba Tribe - Etosha NP - Kavango River - Okavango Delta Excursion - Chobe NP Activities - Victoria Falls NP. This trip means more desert time on big sand dunes and more wildlife time, less saltwater time...more famous views of the classic Africa.

I'm not sure if Mike has written back to you yet (we haven't had internet service at home for weeks), so here's my quick opinion. We traveled with the Africa Travel Company (ATC) on a big green overland truck. We had a great time. The food was good, the guide was well-informed, the campsites were well planned, and everything just seemed to fit together into a perfect package. We loved Namibia...climbing a dune at sunrise was a highlight. Also, poling along in a wooden mokoro through the Okavango Delta in Botswana was a great cultural experience. I'm sure no matter what you end up doing in Africa you'll have a great time, but I recommend the tour company we traveled with. Other overland trucks didn't have a cook onboard, so everyone had to work together (with up to 30 other people) to create meals. Other groups also had a lot of late-night party-ers, while our tour company tended to have more considerate passengers.

Yes, that's the website of the company that we traveled with. We booked through e-gnu, but found out once we got to Cape Town that Africa Travel Company was the name of the company that we were really traveling with. E-gnu is apparently just a travel agent...I glanced at the ATC website and it looks like their upcoming trips are booking up fast.

Did you decide on this??? I went with www.drifters.com from cape town to vic falls via namibia about five years ago. namibia was awesome! and the company was great... i used another company from vic to nairobi and they were mediocre so beware - 2 twice the price but ten times the value!!!
find out about the truck. you want one with windows vs roll up tarpaulins or be ready to eat dust.
and take time... it is easy to get on a tour that covers a lot of ground but you just sit in the truck a lot. more if needed ... Bill E in Alaska
